Is it compulsory that transcript for international students pass through a 3rd party credential validation agency?
Muhammad Sohaib
49:15
Having Doctor of Pharmacy and then Msc in Drug Toxicology and Safety Pharmacology will allow my eligibility for PhD Cancer Epidemiology?
Alden Gross
50:11
There are a whole host of factors we balance when considering PhD applicants, and your past academic progress is certainly impressive.
Nathaniel Carrillo
51:29
hi, for phd in epidemiology, do you suggest we contact potential advisers at this point in the application?
Kaila
52:29
Can you pursued a MPH at the same time as a masters or doctorate in epidemiology?
Alden Gross
52:45
@Nathaniel - I would say, certainly please do reach out to faculty whose interests may match yours. Most all of us (I can't speak for everybody) are happy to correspond with potential students - it's why we are in academia
Nathaniel Carrillo
53:24
@alden thank you so much!
Fran Burman
53:39
Hi. We do suggest that you pursue one degree at a time but you can take a ton of courses appropriate for your research and training
Alden Gross
54:11
@Kaila. No. An MHS overlaps a lot with the MPH such that it is illogical to do both. The only way to get an MHS alongside a PhD is to do an MHS through Biostatistics, if you are quantitatively enthusuastic
Kaila
54:56
Thank you!
Alden Gross
55:03
That said, sometimes folks get an MHS to "dip their toes in the water" and follow it up with a PHD. This is what I did, through the Department of Mental Health.
Muhammad Sohaib
56:03
is having master in public health and currently doing Msc Epidemiology and Biostatistics (Research in Process) is an advantage for PhD in Epidemiology?or just Master in Public Health is Sufficient as a prerequisite?
Sulamita Barbiratto
57:44
I love infectious diseases!😊
Alden Gross!
57:47
@Muhammed. I would say the MPH is fine to have. There is no prerequisite per se - given that our Department is very broad and encompasses a lot of subject matter areas and types of science. That said, when it comes to PhD's we do like to see quantitatively oriented expertise.
Muhammad Sohaib
58:30
Thanks @Alden
Muhammad Sohaib
58:51
PLease tell us about the deadline for PhD?
Avonne Connor
58:52

01:03:20
Any exemption for Application Fee??
Ryan D.
01:03:29
is a Mph required to apply for the PhD program, or can a MS be competitive with sufficient background in epi and mathematics?
Laura Camarata (she\her)
01:04:01
@Ryan, any related master's is is weighed, doesn't need to be an MPH
Akshay Deverakonda (he/him)
01:04:02
If we have a bachelor's degree from the US and studied abroad for one semester, (1) do we need to submit the study abroad transcript as well? and (2) does it need to be evaluated by WES or another credentialing service?
Stephanie
01:04:06
Great to know. Thank you!
Muhammad Sohaib
01:04:15
If having a previous master from English speaking country will English language requirement can be exempted??
Luis Correia
01:04:30
For PhD: I have graduated MPH at BSPH, do I need to submit TOEFL?
Muhammad Sohaib
01:04:35
do the English language requirement must be submitted along the application deadline??
Laura Camarata (she\her)
01:04:37
@Rookim, you can find info in the faculty pages https://publichealth.jhu.edu/departments/epidemiology/people/faculty
Bige Ozkan
01:05:00
@Akshay - when your school sends your transcript to WES, they need to include all grades (abroad and at your school)
Muhammad Sohaib
01:05:54
WES evaluation may take time so if this is not done by DEC 1. Will the application be not consider??
Fahima Bushra
01:06:18
Do you count the one year full time internship we do in hospitals after Bachelor in Dental Surgery as sufficient work experience for PhD? I am from Bangladesh by the way.
Laura Camarata (she\her)
01:06:30
@Vicente, I would start with the faculty pagesm https://publichealth.jhu.edu/departments/epidemiology/people/faculty, and then you can do literature or grant searches for what is active/current
Justin Switzer
01:06:42
Here is a link to some information regarding language requirements and exemptions: https://publichealth.jhu.edu/offices-and-services/office-of-admissions-services/international-applicants

Are the MHS programs STEM-designated? Is there any advantage of studying STEM-designated programs, especially for international students? Is research(which is published) mandatory for the epidemiology department? What type of experience is required?
Hannah Battey
01:09:04
I’m guessing that the COVID-19 pandemic has increased the number of applications to many of the tracks, especially the infectious disease..are there more applicants expected to be granted funding to the Epi PhD to accommodate the increased demand or is it just more competitive?
Uzoamaka Okwor
01:09:33
Are there funding opportunities for international student to apply and can a student apply before being offered an admission?
Luis Correia
01:09:43
My Course-by-Course evaluation transcript is already in Sophas from the time I applied for MPH. I suppose I do not need to get another evaluation, correct?
Bige Ozkan
01:10:19
There are many students joining the MHS program without prior publications/significant research experience. Interest in research and a background in STEM is preferred https://e-catalogue.jhu.edu/public-health/departments/epidemiology/epidemiology-mhs/
Laura Camarata (she\her)
01:10:27
@Sulamita, it is open now through Dec 1, and will open again next fall, for a Dec 1 deadline as well.
Justin Switzer
01:11:08
@EWoldemeskel's iPhone Yes, the EPI MHS is a STEM program. Publications for admission is not necessary. You can see some information about the program here: https://publichealth.jhu.edu/academics/mhs-dept-of-epidemiology

01:14:49
@Laura, as the date is December 1st, I will not have enough time to submit my application.
Rookmin Tiwary
01:15:05
Hello Corrie, may I ask if you have a word limit for the statement of objective? thank you
Laura Camarata (she\her)
01:15:26
@Hannah, it varies year to year but we have seen more applicants to all our program post-pandemic. We take a set amount of doctoral students every year, so it can be more competitive, depending on the pool
Muhammad Sohaib
01:15:38
can one apply for more PhD programs such as in different concentration? or seperate application will have to submitted for different concentrations?
Rookmin Tiwary
01:15:42
Thank you
Justin Switzer
01:16:13
@Muhammad you can apply to up to 3 separate programs per application cycle.

01:25:13
Can competitive candidates expect an interview process after an initial review of the application or is the application the only information used to determine acceptance? Any information on that would be appreciated!
Justin Switzer
01:26:28
@Hannah There is an interview process after initial application review.
Fran Burman
01:26:49
@Hannah - yes, once the initial review occurs, we will invite the competitive applicants to join
Fran Burman
01:27:08
join us online for interviews
Uzoamaka Okwor
01:27:12
I just want to know, I have completed my application and it has been verified by SOPHAS, so what is the next step for me. Thank you
Akshay Deverakonda (he/him)
01:27:17
Is there an interview for MHS/ScM applicants as well or only PhD applicants?
Soyun Kim
01:27:27
Thank you so much for this session! So helpful! Would love to hear about a bit more about your work/ research backgrounds before joining the program - and how you developed your research interest!
Anita Dam
01:27:36
For any of the panelists - for your dissertation proposals, are there opportunities for primary data collection or do you mainly do secondary analysis?
Fran Burman
01:27:41
Masters applicants do not have to go through interviews
Hannah Battey
01:27:42
Would love to hear a timeline of your experiences at JH from year one onward! What to expect in terms of coursework, internships, teaching, research, etc. Also what the PhD camaraderie is like since I’m sure you are all busy and off doing your own research! :)
Muhammad Sohaib
01:28:51
is prior research publication required and is a criteria or having weightage for apply in PhD?
Dr Ruchika Golani
01:28:52
can we apply in 2 different tracks in PhD?

What are the average cohort sizes for ScM students in Epi?
Justin Switzer
01:30:55
@Uzoamaka Once you have completed and submitted your application, there is nothing else you need to do unless our Admissions Office reaches out regarding the application for verification purposes.

01:32:17
Hello! As a prospective student from the Philippines currently working in the government, have you had opportunities while studying to also contribute to local public health research projects in your countries of origin?
Fran Burman
01:32:59
boosting Hannah's question: What to expect in terms of coursework, internships, teaching, research, etc. Also what the PhD camaraderie is like since I’m sure you are all busy and off doing your own research! :)

01:33:20
Which one is better (studying MHS or MSPH) for a person looking forward to a career in medicine and research?
Willow Crawford-Crudell
01:35:01
Along with the statement of purpose, there are supplemental questions to address your specific interest in the program and the faculty. What would you say the difference between the statement of purpose and these supplemental questions is?
Fran Burman
01:36:09
Hi, Willow. Our Admissions committee reviews the specific questions with a good focus on how you describe your background, your motivation, and your ideas about the field.
Fran Burman
01:37:18
There are a lot of opportunities for these milestones but we are expecting you all to complete your programs!!
Hannah Battey
01:37:54
I really love all the community content/engagement that Bloomberg creates, from the Public Health On Call podcast, to the instagram account…is that run by master’s students? Is there a student org that runs that? Curious to hear about extracurricular involvements on campus, in Baltimore, and beyond!
Fran Burman
01:38:43
Hi, Hannah - yes, PH on Call hires students interns!
Akshay Deverakonda (he/him)
01:39:16
Can ScM students transition into a PhD similar to what Tiange is describing? (so shortening 2 years of ScM and 5 years of PhD to something combined)
Fran Burman
01:40:23
Hi. Akshay - the ScM is a 2 year program but, in the past, the PhD students who grad from our programs finish their PhD in 3-4 years
Fran Burman
01:40:53
Our PhD program is completed in 4 years normally.
Kaila
01:42:02
I got my bachelors in chemical engineering and have done undergraduate research what type of additional work experience would the admissions office be looking for for the master of science?

Fran Burman
01:45:45
We regularly get engineers applying to our programs (and staying on as faculty!!)
Muhammad Sohaib
01:46:50
asking my question again.. is prior research publication is required and have weight in selection process?
Fran Burman
01:48:41
No - no age limit to applying to our program
Fran Burman
01:49:06
The average age of our students is 27 with a range from 18-57.
