Monica Mugnier
32:48
Definitely!
Aryan Pradhan
32:49
The LOR has to be uploaded on the application site by my teachers or do I have to do it?
Ayana Paul
34:56
How many of your grad students pursue certificate programs?
Gail O'Connor
36:00
Several of our students do enroll in certificates while they are here. It's not uncommon.
Tisha Desai
38:56
after completing masters will it give transition to phd program?
Monica Mugnier
39:13
Students can apply to the PhD program, but there is no formal transfer option
Monica Mugnier
39:29
We have had ScMs apply to the PhD and end up joining the program after being accepted
Ayana Paul
39:36
I am interested studying microbiology and immunology, however it is very important to me that I gain skills in science communication and applying my knowledge to public health. Are there current MMI students that are involved in public health and policy? Do these students mainly use certificate programs to fulfill these interests?
Monica Mugnier
41:56
Ayana, which program are you interested in?
Ayana Paul
43:34
I am interested in MCBID
Monica Mugnier
43:53

Jamie Smith (she/her)

44:54
I'm in the two year ScM program!
Patrick Creisher

Jamie Smith (she/her)
45:11
Thanks!
Ayana Paul
45:19
I am interested in the PhD program.
Monica Mugnier
46:02
Great! I was curious because in the context of the PhD program you have a lot more time to pursue certificate programs, get involved in public health, policy, etc
Monica Mugnier
46:45
Vs the masters programs which are just less time to squeeze everything in (though students do complete certificates in the ScM, often!)
Ayana Paul
50:05
In terms of communicating science to the general public and public outreach, can I be directed to student groups that relate to this? Are there communities within the MMI student body that are active in this regard?
Gail O'Connor
50:33
Ayana - Send me an email about this and I'll look into it for you.
Monica Mugnier
51:50
The R3 program is very focused on this stuff. you may want to talk to Gundula Bosch, who runs the program, or at least look her up on twitter :)
Ayana Paul
52:44
Ok thank you @Gail O'Connor!
Gail O'Connor
53:02
You're welcome!
Ayana Paul
54:27
Do these faculty generally promote healthy work-life balance? Every lab has it's own culture but how would you describe the general culture within this department?
Tisha Desai
55:24
for applying to PhD to which department can we inquire ?
Gail O'Connor
55:55
Tisha: Are you referring to our PhD program?
Ayana Paul
55:59
Within the Department of Molecular Microbiology and Immunology
Gail O'Connor
56:25

Monica Mugnier

@Aryan ScM decisions are usually pretty fast (within weeks), but I will not make any promises there because I don’t want something to come up that delays us!
Aryan Pradhan
01:00:18
Thank You Ma’am @Monica Mugnier
Ayana Paul
01:00:45
Thank you for your honesty!
Kally Tan
01:02:38
What’s the student to faculty ratio like and would you recommend us reaching out to the faculty to learn more about their research areas before applying?
Kally Tan
01:03:07
Do you have any advice for applicants who are on the fence between a PhD program and Master’s program?
Monica Mugnier
01:04:49
Kally we’ll talk about your questions next
Kally Tan
01:05:46
What kind of students are the department looking for or what qualities should a student have in order to be successful in this department?
Kally Tan
01:05:49
Thank you!
Aryan Pradhan
01:06:56
Yeah even I wanna know this what qualities in a student is MMI looking out for? Because like in my case my Bachelors is 3 years so I kinda lose out there as well!
Francine Baker
01:26:08
Regarding the personal statement, what are some things we should include to make a string personal statement. What should we avoid?
Ayana Paul
01:27:50
Would section headers in the personal statement be helpful?
Francine Baker
01:29:54
Thank you all so very much. This was extremely helpful. Especially the discussion on how this particular program connects to public health.
Gail O'Connor
01:30:33
You're welcome, Francine. Feel free to reach out to any of us with additional questions as they come up.
Kally Tan
01:33:07
Thank you all for your time!
Ayana Paul
01:33:16
I have recently been advised that sometimes reviewers/faculty do not want students who do not want to go into academia. I know that MMI alumni have entered spaces other than academia based on the website but I would like confirmation that talking about my career interests and what I hope to gain from the program will not be an issue.
Aryan Pradhan
01:35:25
Thank You so much to everyone for answering so many of the Qs. Looking forward to applying soon now and hopefully getting selected!
Garrett Chen
