Description
Join us on April 24, 2025 for a special edition of the 3Rs Training Webinar Series, hosted by Dr. Kathrin Herrmann, Director of CAAT’s Beyond Classical Refinement Program. In recognition of the International Day to Abolish Animal Use in Science, this thought-provoking event will explore why animal experimentation continues to dominate scientific research - even in the face of compelling ethical arguments and decades of data highlighting its poor reproducibility and limited human relevance. Part I: Presentation by Love Hansell "The Resilience of Animal Experimentation: Understanding Systemic Barriers to Scientific Progress" Duration: approx. 50 minutes, followed by a short Q&A Love Hansell, a political scientist and PhD researcher at Radboud University, will examine how animal experimentation has become entrenched as the "gold standard" in research. Drawing on insights from the social sciences, he will reveal the structural, cultural, and institutional barriers that prevent the adoption of non-animal methods (NAMs) - and how these barriers impact early-career researchers committed to ethical and innovative science. Part II: Panel Discussion "Navigating Change: Early-Career Perspectives on Advancing Non-Animal Methods (NAMs)" Duration: approx. 60 minutes This panel brings together early-career researchers to share personal stories from the front lines of the transition to animal-free science. The discussion will explore what inspired them to pursue NAMs, how they are overcoming systemic barriers, and how peer support and communities like Young TPI are helping build a more ethical research culture. Panelists: - Julia Menon, biologist, meta-researcher & entrepreneur, COMPASS - Sue van de Griendt, fundamental researcher & PhD candidate, Radboud University, The Netherlands - Fatima Zohra Abarkan, medical biologist & research assessor, Radboud University Medical Center & Vice-Chair of Young TPI
